Thin film magnetocalorics

Magnetocalorics are solid-state materials that are theoretically much more efficient than vapor compression based refrigeration technologies and have the potential to revolutionize the thermal management (i.e., cooling) of consumer electronics, which will substantially raise device performance and lifetime. However, magnetocaloric materials have only been fabricated in bulk form, with demonstrated efficiencies far from theoretical estimates. Our route to unlocking the true potential of this technology is by fabricating the material as a thin film using our MIMSI process technique, where we can access and exploit nanosize effects to dramatically improve efficacy. Research is ongoing.
